Oscar 1947: Competition
The most impressive male performance in 1947 was delivered by William Powell in Life with Father, for which he won the New York Film Critics Award.
Yet the Oscar winner was Ronald Colman in A Double Life, winning over stiff competition from Gregory Peck in A Gentleman's Agreement and John Garfield in Body and Soul; the fifth nominee was Michael Redgrave in Mourning Becomes Electra.
The female category that year was not particularly strong. The winner, Loretta Young in The Farmer's Daughter was up against Joan Crawford in her second nomination, for Possessed, Susan Hayward in SmashUp: The Story of a Woman, Dorothy McGuire in Gentleman's Agreement, and four-time nominee Rosalind Russell in Mourning Becomes Electra.
