“Cry Baby,” John Waters’ sweet-natured yarn concerns teen rebels and distraught parents.  Set in Baltimore in 1954, it’s about a good girl (Amy Locane) torn between her pristine roots and a black-leathered Elvis-type hunk (Johnny Depp). 

More polished than “Hairspray,” which preceded it, but less sharply focused, original or funny, the film received mixed critical response, but proved to be a commercial flop despite the charming performance from Depp, who would become a major star in his films with Tim Burton, beginning with “Edward Scissorhands.”
